The man who founded Alibaug belonged to the Angre family , appointed commanders of the Maratha Navy in the time of Shivaji himself.Kanhoji Angre was a powerful man.The vast water stretches in Alibaug lure you which is about 113 km south of Mumbai. It takes 3 hours by road and 50 mins by sea route with a 30 min drive by road.You can catch a ferry from Gateway of India at regular intervals from 6:00 am to 6:30 pm to reach Mandwa. From Mandwa you can catch a jeep or a bus/taxi to Alibaug.
Alibaug has the blackest sand in the region and is very lively , full of bathers in the mornings and food stalls by evenings. You can also head out to Kolaba Fort from here on a horse cart.
Only 3 kms from Alibaug , Akshi is a quiet beach favoured by bird watchers and nature lovers. On the way you can see the stone tablets or the ‘ Shilas’.
Nagaon Beach is recognized by its smell of fish. It is 7 km away from Alibaug. You can visit the twin Khanderi and Undheri Forts from here.
The famous Kihim beach is a short ride from alibaug approx. 11km, can be a popular retreat from your retreat. The sand here is white but the beach is stony.
20 mins from Alibaug is the Versoli beach. There is the Kolaba Fort on one side and the Khanderi and Undheri Forts on the other side.
Situated 12 kms from Alibaug on Rewas road after driving through coconut planatations and overlapping hills there emerges the Kankeshwar Devasthan. It was built in 1764 and is decorated with colourful miniature idols of the Gods. Besides devotees , mutts a nd mongrels stroll around with a confidence that comes from having a resedential status. Nearby is the Kankeshwar Forest but venture into it at your own risk as there are many wild animals and poisonous snakes here.
Nagoba Mandir is 20 mins from the Saswane Beach. You wil find bells hung in clusters of 4,6,12 and the odd solitary cymbal. People come here to ask for divine favours and return to tie bells once their wishes are granted.
Spread across 28 acres Vrindavan Farm near Kankeshwar Phata stocks all kinds of exotic and everyday plants. The plants are up for sale.It also has an arts and crafts gallery.
