The Bombay Natural History Society, founded on 15 September 1883, is one of the largest non-governmental organizations in India engaged in conservation and biodiversity research. It publishes a four monthly Journal and a quarterly magazine, Hornbill. It is situated in south Mumbai. Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) is a forum that initiates discussions and observations on natural history and exhibits an interesting array of specimens of nature.
The BNHS logo is the Great Hornbill, inspired by a Great Hornbill named William, who lived on the premises of the Society from 1894 until 1920. The logo was created in 1933, the silver-jubilee year of the Society’s founding.
The Bombay Natural History Society has more than 30 countries as its active member, functioning based on scientific research for conservation of the species and environment. The guiding code of the society has been the tradition that was nurtured by the legendary Ornithologist and Naturalist Dr. Salim Ali.
Nature lovers across the world have been donating rare specimens to the society for over a century. You could witness a host of specimens of beetles, butterflies and embalmed reptiles.
You can attain a temporary membership of the society. The membership will allow you to use the library of the Society as well as attend various lectures and slide shows that are held weekly. The society is not open to public and hence you must have a prior permission before you plan a visit there.
