If you are a regular commuter in Mumbai’s Local train (western line), this will come as a relief to you. Come this year end, the railways plan to convert all the 23 nine car rakes to twelve car rakes. The entire churchgate – borivali corridor will be converted from DC to AC. The new arrangement will create additional space for one lakh commuters daily.
During the peak hour rush, there is a train running every 3 minutes, so they can not increase the frequency of the trains. The only option is to increase the number of rakes, so the trains can ferry more commuters. Now they plan to increase all 9 car rakes to 12 car rakes. Soon, this will fall short too, and all trains will have to be converted to 15 car rakes.
At present, Western railway has a local with 15 rakes that offers 12 services between Dadar and Vasai daily.
